Gus’ Favorite Cookie Recipe :-)

Hi Kelly,
Do you have any good recipes for dog treats that are all natural?  If there is no wheat or gluten that would be good.  Thanks

Hey Irene… Of course I have a good recipe for dog cookies!  Your timing is perfect as I’ve been home cooking for my Coonhound, Gus, using the Honest Kitchen Premix for the past several months.  I’ve also started baking Gus’ treats and they are absolutely delicious and super nutritious!

Turkey & Sweet Potato YUMMIES!

Honestly, there are an overabundance of recipes for dog treats on-line, but the following recipe is Gus’ (and my) favorite as it’s very meat based which is a great choice for any dog.  For anyone that knows me, simplicity is also high on my list when choosing a recipe…hence this one fits the bill.

TURKY & SWEET POTATO YUMMIES!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb canned sweet potato (I alternate with pumpkin)
  • 1 lb ground turkey (or chicken)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 5 Tablespoons Quaker whole uncooked oats (substitute with Quinoa for Gluten Free OR omit all together for grain free recipe, but you may have to cook a bit longer )
  • 1 egg

Mix all ingredients together and spread in 1/2″ deep pre-greased cookie/baking sheet.  Cook for 1 hour at 350 degrees.  Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.  Cut the cookies (leaving in pan) and cook again for 1 hour at 250 degrees.  Let cool, cut up into smaller portions.  It is best to refrigerate the cookies as they don’t contain any preservatives.  Also, I freeze the cookies that won’t be eaten within five days to keep fresh.

The above recipe is fairly easy and I have modified it many times adding several different herbs, substituting different meat proteins and replacing sweet potato with pumpkin.  And, I used the Honest Kitchen Premix in place of the Quaker oats to make the recipe grain free.  I don’t know the actual calorie count for this recipe, however the recipe is mostly meat and sweet potato, so it is NOT high in fat, therefore not too high in calories.

These cookies are truly DROOLICIOUS and your dog will love them.  NOTE:  My three cats also love these cookies and it is safe and appropriate them as well!  :-)

Here is a delicious dog cookie recipe that even my sister’s dog, who wouldn’t eat dog cookies, loved. It’s from bullwrinkle.com. The original recipe calls for margerine but I use butter as it is, in my mind, a more wholesome ingredient than margerine.
    3/4 c. hot water
    1/3 c. butter or margerine
    1/2 c. powdered milk
    1 tsp. salt
    1 beaten egg
    4 c. oat flour
In a large bowl pour the hot water over the margerine or butter. Let sit until softened. Stir in powdered milk, salt and egg. Add flour one cup at a time. Batter will be stiff. Knead for a couple of minutes to form a stiff dough. Roll to a 1/4 – 1/2 inch thickness. I use a 1 1/2 inch round cookie cutter to cut out the cookie shapes but any cookie cutter shape will do. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. When the cookies are cool they will be crunchie. If the cookies seem too soft let them sit in the oven while it cools. Makes about 1 1/4 pound of cookies at a cost of about 30 cents per pound. Recipe may also be doubled. Hope your doggy(s) likes them!
